Yudhister is said to be the one with a golden heart & true to his word. It is said that anyone who came to his court with a request was granted the same.
It so happened that a simple villager made his presence felt one day. As always, the generous Yudhister urged the villager to be upfront about his request. The simpleton villager conveyed that in order to settle an old debt, he was in dire need of 100 pieces of Gold.
Upon hearing this, the king was taken aback, since it was the first time someone had asked him of such a big sum. His mind was full of contemplation and after not fully comprehending the situation, Yudhister finally told the simpleton villager to come tomorrow at the same time and take the requested gold with him.
As a part of the victory celebration, whenever war was won, kettledrums were played across the region to convey the victory to all the citizens. On listening to brother Yudhister telling the villager to come tomorrow, younger brother Bhim immediately got up and started playing the kettledrum. This sudden action of Bhim surprised King Yudhister and others in the court. He urged his younger brother to come near him and asked – Brother Bhim, what sort of war have I won now that you started playing the drums?
With all humility, brother Bhim said – My dear King Yudhister, I’m beating the drums as you’ve had the biggest victory today. There can be nothing better than what you’ve won today. This is the first time something like this has ever happened across Bharat (India), I was overjoyed and hence decided to beat the drums.
This led to King Yudhister getting more confused – What is it that Brother Bhim knows that I don’t know? Which Victory is he talking about? How come I and the entire court missed this supposed victory which is so grand in its nature, one which has never happened earlier? Again, the puzzled King asked – Brother Bhim, please do not keep me in the suspense, share the victory details with me as well.
Bhim replied – Oh mighty, truthful, kind Yudhister, you promised that you will give 100 pieces of Gold to the villagers tomorrow, right? Yes, I did – replied Yudhister.
Bhim says – We all know for a fact that our truthful King Yudhister never speaks a lie. So the biggest victory happened is that you are sure you will be alive tomorrow. You have conquered death and there cannot be a bigger victory than conquering death.
Yudhister immediately realized his folly of procrastination and called his Finance Minister to immediately hand over 100 pieces of Gold to the simpleton villager.
He thanked Bhim for making him realise his mistake and has left a very big message for all of us on Earth who love their families:-
